I. Development Basis
Wuhan ,the capital of Hubei Province , is the cultural and economic center in central China Region. The city government administrates at present 13 districts , totaling 8491 km2 and accommodating 8,300,000 residents.

Metallurgy , automobile ,machinery, and hi –tech industries are the four pillar industries. As the thoroughfare to nine provinces , Wuhan appears to be a national hub of communication. The distance between Wuhan and those metropolitans as HongKong , Beijing , Shanghai ,and Chongqing is all about 1,000 km .
Highway : The wuhan highways are largely composed of No.106,107,316,318, and national highways intersect the Wuhan City proper at nine major city exits. In addition, the two main arteries intersect the branch railways, such as Wuhan —Jiujiang , Wuhan —Danjiangkou , Wuhan —Daye railways , and the liaison railway linked up to the Beijing — Kowloon railways at Wuhan . Therefore , Wuhan railway station lies in the center of China railway networks. Each day , 77 passengers trains departing Wuhan and 120 passing through Wuhan may connect the city proper directly with other 21 large cities.
Waterway : Wuhan Port is the biggest port in inland China . It can handle up 40 million tons of cargo every year. Foreign ships can travel directly to Wuhan Port. There is a special new wharf for foreign trade opened in Qingshan of Wuhan. There are shipping lines leading to 14 countries and regions including Russia , Japan , Singapore , as well as Hongkong and Macau .
Airway : Wuhan Tianhe International Airport is the fourth largest airport in China . Now, 50 airways are in operation, going to 50 cities in China .At present , it has opened international airlines leading to Hongkong ,Macau , Fukuoka ( Japan ), Bangkok ( Thailand ) and Incheon ( South Korea ).
Communications : Wuhan Post is one of the seven largest national Post centers and eight largest airline post centers, and also the largest mail distribution center in the central and southern China . Wuhan Telecommunication Bureau is an important communicational hub. The Beijing—Wuhan--Guangzhou coaxial cable line intersects the Shanghai—Nanjing –Wuhan—Chongqing optic --fiber cable communication line at Wuhan .The installed capacity of programmed telephone is 1.80 million ,ranking the fourth among large cities, and the installed capacity of mobile phone is 0.42 million ,the fifth among Chinese capacity cities.
Wuhan is the largest inland commodity circulation center characterized with strong distribution and wide coverage, the market of which ranges about 600 countries and cities in 30 provinces. The strong distribution of Wuhan market is very beneficial to the marketing and sales of the enterprisers in WEDZ.
III. Infrastructure Facilities
Note:
WEDZ is responsible for road, power and communication pipes and lines connected to the edge of investors' land. Gas ,Heat and railway are available for some pieces of land .It is necessary for investors to apply prior to project construction.
Since the establishment of WEDZ, the government has invested RMB ￥ 3 billion in the construction of infrastructure.
Power Supply :Daily transformers of 110 KV one substation of 220KV 2 × 180,00 KVA have been built . A peak adjustment power plant with the first phase capacity of 180,000KW has been put into operation.
Gas : A gas plant with a first-phase daily supply capacity of 140,000m3 has been into operation. Its capacity will reach 3,800, 000m3 finally. The under construction project of ‘National Gas Transmission from East to west' will be completed in 2004. Till then , the gas pipe will enter WEDZ, and the enterprises in the zone can make full use of the energy.
Heat Supply : A heating centre with first—phase capacity of 150 tons/Hour has gone into operation.
Telecommunications : WEDZ Telecom offers services in telephone, Cable facsimile, mobile phone , micro wave communication date transfer, like EMS, FedEx , China Airline Express, etc are available in WEDZ Various postal services.
Roads : A road network with total length over 60 km is open to traffic. National Highway Shanghai— Chengdu goes through the zone from east to west , and Beijing —Zhuhai Express way from north to south. Thus ,the two meet in WEDZ.
Railways : A special—purpose railway line connected with Beijing —Guangzhou Railway and Beijing — Kowloon Railway has been built.
Port : A ro—ro wharf with handling capacity of 139,000 cars and another comprehensive wharf is under construction. Wuhan Container Port with annual handling capacity of 10 million tons is only 6.5km from WEDZ.
Drainage works : According to the principle of ‘rain water and sewage gong different ways ',two different networks of rain water and sewage with total length of 132 km have been established.
Sewage Treatment : A sewage treatment plant with first phase capacity of 60,000 T/D and final capacity of 180,000 T/D is under construction.
IV. Service Facilities
Schools : Wuhan Foreign Languages (International) School enrolls students from home and abroad. In addition, there are 24 primary and middle schools , a comprehensive universities and a commercial college.
Hospital : Shenlong Hospital , a comprehensive hospital ,is equipped with advanced facilities. Four hospitals and a clinic in the zone provide various services.
Residence : By the beautiful Sanjiaohu Lake, there is a villa area of 430,000 m2 for foreign experts and living quarters od 670,000 m2 for staffs and workers such as Oriental Garden ,Green Land ,Golden Bay. Etc.
